The sand here is incredibly wide and soft, the Hotel del Coronado adds a gorgeous historic backdrop, and the light during golden hour is absolutely beautiful. It tends to feel more open and spacious than a lot of other spots. There is plenty of room to spread out and really make the beach feel like it belongs just to you.

This is a wonderful choice if you love that classic, romantic coastal feel and want a variety of backdrops all in one location. Golden hour here is truly something special.

Del Mar Dog Beach: Wide Open, Cliff Views, and Yes, Bring Your Pup

If your dog is absolutely part of the family and there is no version of your engagement session that happens without them, Del Mar Dog Beach is the answer. This spot is one of the few San Diego beaches that is fully dog-friendly. It’s a really special option for couples who want their pup in the photos. And the good news is that the location delivers on every other front as well.

The beach is wide and open with a really beautiful cliffline running along the back. It adds incredible depth and texture to images. It has that same spacious, relaxed energy as Coronado, with the added bonus of some really gorgeous framing from the bluffs. Sessions here feel easy and joyful, which honestly tends to bring out the best in couples and dogs alike.

One practical note to keep in mind is that metered parking is required at Del Mar. Allow time to park + pay before your session. It is a small thing, but worth knowing in advance so you’re not surprised on the day of your session.

Torrey Pines and Blacks Beach: Breathtaking, Remote, and a Little Adventurous

If you’re looking for something that feels wild and cinematic, Blacks Beach at Torrey Pines is in its own category. The dramatic cliffs, the pristine sand, and the sense of being completely away from the rest of the world. This spot makes for images that feel like they belong in a magazine. This is one of the most visually stunning spots on the entire San Diego coastline.

One thing that makes this location truly unexpected is the Torrey Pines Gliderport sitting up on the cliffs above. On the right day, hang gliders soar right overhead while you are down on the sand, and the result is one of the most epic backdrops you’ll find anywhere in San Diego. It is the kind of detail that makes your photos completely one of a kind.

There are two things to be fully aware of before choosing this location. First, getting down to the beach requires a hike, and it is not a particularly or easy one. It’s not terribly long, but it’s a hike straight down and straight back up. Not paved, but there is a distinct trail and some parts have wooden steps. Comfortable shoes for the trek down are a must. Plan to go barefoot once you reach the sand. Second, and this is important, Blacks Beach is a clothing-optional beach. The nudists are always edited out of final images, but being present on a nude beach is simply part of the experience here. For couples who are adventurous and totally fine with it, the payoff in terms of location beauty is absolutely incredible.

Sunset Cliffs: Dramatic, Stunning, and Worth Planning Around

Sunset Cliffs is one of the most requested San Diego photo locations. Honestly, it earns that reputation every single time. The jagged cliffs, the crashing waves, and colors that paint the sky at sunset make for images that are absolutely breathtaking. If you have ever seen a San Diego engagement photo and thought, where on earth is that, there is a very good chance it was taken here.

It is worth knowing that Sunset Cliffs actually has two very different areas to work with. The main spot near Pappy’s Point is the one most people picture, and the famous arch there is absolutely iconic. It is beautiful and beloved, and also the most heavily visited part of the cliffs. If that classic arch shot is on your must-have list, this is where you want to be.

However, if you would rather have a little more breathing room, the area closer to Point Loma is a wonderful alternative that most people completely overlook. There are walking trails along the cliffs with beautiful, sweeping views of the ocean, and the atmosphere feels much more peaceful and private. You do not get the arch, but you do get stunning scenery and a lot more space to yourselves. Both areas are genuinely worth considering depending on what kind of experience you are after.

Regardless of which section you choose, weekday sessions and earlier timing go a long way toward avoiding the biggest crowds. Even with some company, the location is so visually stunning that it tends to be completely worth it.

Windansea Beach: Full of Character and a Little Bit of Edge

Windansea has this really cool, textured personality that sets it apart from the smoother, more polished beaches on this list. The rock formations, the surf culture, and the slightly rugged feel give photos taken here a really distinct and interesting quality. It is a fun location that works especially well for couples who are a little adventurous or want something that feels less expected.

This beach can get busy, particularly as the day goes on and the surf crowd fills in, so sunrise tends to work in your favor here as well. Otherwise, just expect to not be solo at Windansea. The iconic thatched surf shack is also a fun little detail that can make for a really memorable image.

Wipeout Beach: Pretty and Peaceful If You Go at the Right Time

Wipeout Beach is a beautiful tucked-away spot that does not always make the top-ten lists, but absolutely should. The water color here is gorgeous and the scene is just really pretty in a quieter, more understated way. Because this beach tends to fill up with beach-day crowds in the afternoon, a sunrise session is genuinely the recommendation here. The light is soft, the beach is calm, and you get the whole place nearly to yourselves. There is something really magical about starting your engagement session as the sun is just coming up over the water.

La Jolla Shores and Scripps Pier: Iconic Views With a Little Walk Involved

La Jolla Shores is absolutely stunning, and the stretch of beach near Scripps Pier creates one of the most iconic backdrops in all of San Diego. The pier stretching out into the ocean makes for a really unique compositional element, and the water here is often this gorgeous deep blue that photographs beautifully.

One thing to know going in is that the parking lot is a little bit of a walk from the pier itself. It is not a difficult walk at all, but it is worth mentioning so that nobody shows up in sky-high heels expecting to park right next to the water. Comfortable sandals or bare feet are always a great call here. The walk is part of the experience, and honestly the whole area is beautiful enough that it is easy to enjoy.
